I wanted to read this one just for the author’s name. It’s actually a pen name; the author’s real name is Daniel Handler. This series of not-just-for-children’s books starts with The Bad Beginning, tracing the tragic misadventures of the Baudelaire orphans as they are shuttled from one inept guardian to another, all the while fending off the nefarious schemes of the evil Count Olaf. The warning on the gorgeously produced jacket says it all: "If you have picked up this book with the hope of finding a simple and cheery tale, I’m afraid you have picked up the wrong book altogether." The books read like bedtime stories by Tim Burton, and I’m sure you’ll adore them. Sweet dreams.
