Sweating out their first drafts, from our foggy shores to steamy Sao Paolo

Looking past this fall, we asked some Bay Area writers what they're working on now that we may end up seeing in the near future.

. . .

-- Daniel Handler, a.k.a. Lemony Snicket, author of "A Series of Unfortunate Events" books: "I'm editing my new novel, for adults, which is called 'Adverbs.' The book is about a bunch of different people and a bunch of different kinds of love, and some of them are happy, and some of them are miserable. It's a pro-love book.

"It's odd to juggle a respectable but controlled career in literary fiction and a sort of giddy, frantic career in children's books. In a couple of months they're going to start filming a movie based on Lemony Snicket books, so I'm now being faxed costume designs and a board-game cover. It feels bizarre that there are people in Los Angeles taking very seriously detailed descriptions of the characteristics of Snicket characters."
